English Language Teaching
International Balkan University, North Macedonia
Overview
A significant focus is placed on exploring the structure of the English language through core areas of linguistics, such as phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Alongside the knowledge about language, the program helps students develop their own English language skills–reading, listening, speaking, and writing–to a high level of proficiency.
As part of their language teacher education, students learn about different theories of how languages are acquired, including behaviorist, cognitive, constructivist, and sociocultural perspectives. Through interactive teaching and reflective learning settings, they explore established and renowned teaching methods and techniques – including instructional technologies, such as IWBs, online platforms, and AI-powered tools – that can serve them as a practical framework for language instruction after graduation. Additionally, students develop essential skills in classroom management techniques, assessment strategies, and cultural awareness enabling them to create inclusive classrooms that meet the needs of diverse learners in a globalized world.
The ELT program offers a balanced program of theoretical study and practical experience so its graduates are ready for a dynamic classroom experience. To ensure a successful transfer of knowledge in real-life settings, students engage in supervised practicum opportunities in local public and private schools. In addition to their coursework, they also benefit from participating in regular seminars, workshops, and professional conferences throughout their studies.
