Founded in 1874, the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is Nevada's flagship public university and its primary land-grant institution. Established under the Morrill Act of 1862, UNR has grown from a small preparatory school in Elko into a comprehensive doctoral research university classified as R1 by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
The University's central 290-acre campus sits on a scenic bluff just north of downtown Reno, offering views of the Truckee Meadows and the Sierra Nevada mountains. UNR serves over 21,000 students through eight colleges and nine schools, offering more than 560 majors, minors, graduate, and certificate programs. The university is also home to Nevada's first medical school and a dedicated Basque Studies center.
UNR is recognized as a Carnegie Engaged University and has invested more than USD 800 million in advanced labs, residence halls, and infrastructure since 2009. Its research strengths include earthquake engineering, environmental science, and large-scale structures testing, and the campus houses one of the most powerful lasers in the country.
