Discover Capilano University: Overview & History

Capilano University (CapU) is a teaching-focused public university based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on the slopes of the North Shore Mountains. Named after Chief Joe Capilano, an important leader of the Squamish Nation, the university serves the Sea-to-Sky Corridor and the Sunshine Coast with more than 100 programs across five distinctive faculties.

Originally founded as Capilano College in 1968, the institution opened with 784 students attending classes in temporary buildings at West Vancouver Secondary School. In 2008, the province of British Columbia changed its designation to a university, and CapU has since grown to enrol approximately 12,700 students per year, including over 2,500 international students from more than 55 countries.

CapU is especially recognized in British Columbia and across Canada for its programs in visual and performing arts, as well as its small class sizes averaging around 25 students. In 2012, it became Canada's first university to receive accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), a major U.S. regional accrediting agency.
