Game Design BA
Brock University Campus, Canada
Overview
The Games and Mobile Entertainment (GAME) program at Brock University is designed for students passionate about video games and interactive media, offering a comprehensive education that blends creativity, technology, and production skills. As video games continue to play a central role in contemporary entertainment and culture, this program prepares students to become leaders, innovators, and collaborators in the game development industry.
Offered concurrently with Niagara College, the program provides a unique interdisciplinary approach, giving students opportunities to explore game design from multiple perspectives. Students study the creative and cultural context of games, examining the history and evolution of game platforms, the principles of design, and contemporary production paradigms. Core concepts such as game mechanics, dynamics, narrative, immersion, and player agency are explored in depth, providing a foundation for creating meaningful and engaging interactive experiences.
A distinctive feature of the program is its intensive hands-on production courses offered in Years 2, 3, and 4. In these courses, students collaborate in teams to design, prototype, and develop game components, culminating in fully realized games. This approach emphasizes project management, teamwork, problem-solving, and iterative design, reflecting the real-world practices of the game industry. Students gain experience with industry-standard tools and software, learning to integrate art, programming, and design principles to deliver polished interactive experiences.
In addition to technical and creative skills, the program encourages students to develop a strong understanding of the social, ethical, and cultural dimensions of games. Students analyze the impact of games on society, explore issues of accessibility and diversity, and consider the role of games in education, entertainment, and social change.
Graduates of the GAME program are prepared for careers in game design, game art, production management, level design, narrative design, and interactive media development. The program also provides a foundation for students interested in graduate studies, independent game development, or entrepreneurial ventures within the rapidly growing gaming and interactive media industries. By combining rigorous academic training with collaborative, production-focused experience, Brock’s GAME program produces graduates who are creative, skilled, and ready to shape the future of interactive entertainment.
