New Media (English)
Beykent University, Turkey
Overview
The New Media Department, housed within the Faculty of Communication, offers a comprehensive 4-year undergraduate program designed to train innovative and competent media professionals equipped to meet the demands of today’s digital communication era. The program aims to develop individuals who possess strong communication skills and a deep understanding of new media technologies, digital platforms, and online communication dynamics. With a curriculum that blends theoretical knowledge and practical application, the department prepares students to become versatile media experts who can navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of digital media.
Students in the New Media Department engage in a wide range of courses that introduce them to contemporary communication tools, digital applications, and emerging media platforms. From the first year, they are immersed in subjects such as online journalism, digital publishing, mobile media, e-government applications, and multimedia content production. The curriculum also explores the use and impact of popular social networking platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter (now X), Instagram, blogs, and podcasts, giving students both critical insight and technical expertise in creating and managing content across these mediums.
A distinctive feature of the program is its focus on the multidisciplinary structure of communication. Students gain a solid foundation in media theory, cultural analysis, and social critique, while also acquiring practical skills in areas such as video editing, web design, social media management, and data analytics. Through this blend of academic and applied learning, students develop the ability to critically assess cultural and societal issues, communicate effectively in digital environments, and produce creative media content that resonates with diverse audiences.
The program also emphasizes language proficiency and global communication skills. As such, an English Preparatory Class is mandatory for all students entering the department. However, students who demonstrate sufficient language proficiency through the Level Determination and Proficiency Exam may bypass the preparatory year and begin their studies directly in the first year of the program. This ensures that all students are well-prepared to access international resources, follow global media trends, and engage in cross-cultural communication.
Graduates of the New Media Department are well-positioned to pursue careers in a wide array of fields, including digital journalism, online media production, social media strategy, digital marketing, e-government communication, and content creation for digital platforms. They leave the program not only as skilled media practitioners but also as critical thinkers and socially responsible communicators who understand the ethical and cultural implications of their work. With the rise of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and immersive media, graduates are also encouraged to pursue further specialization or advanced degrees, making them adaptable leaders in the ever-changing world of new media.
