Bellarmine University

Bellarmine University is a private, independent Catholic university located in the Highlands neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. Founded in 1950 as Bellarmine College under the sponsorship of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville and the Conventual Franciscan Fathers, it was named after Saint Robert Bellarmine, a Jesuit scholar and cardinal. Originally an all-male institution, it became coeducational in 1968 after merging with Ursuline College. In 2000, it was renamed Bellarmine University to reflect its expansion in academic programs and scope, and in 2019 it was reclassified as a Doctoral/Professional University under the Carnegie Classification.

Bellarmine’s mission emphasizes educating students in mind, body, and spirit for meaningful lives, ethical leadership, service, and the betterment of society. While rooted in its Catholic heritage, the university fosters an inclusive and welcoming environment. Its values include academic excellence, respect for human dignity, integrity, hospitality, and social responsibility.

Academically, Bellarmine offers over 50 undergraduate majors, a wide range of master’s programs, and several doctoral and professional degrees in areas such as education, nursing practice, and physical therapy. It also provides second-degree, certificate, and online/hybrid programs. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Bellarmine’s business school also holds the prestigious AACSB accreditation. With a student-faculty ratio of around 12–13 to 1 and average class sizes of about 20, the university provides a highly personalized learning environment.

The university’s campus spans about 145 acres of rolling hills through which Beargrass Creek flows. It includes a blend of historic and modern facilities such as the W. L. Lyons Brown Library, Our Lady of the Woods Chapel, health sciences centers, residence halls including the Siena complex and Anniversary Hall, and recreation and athletic facilities. The Thomas Merton Center, which preserves the works and legacy of the influential writer and monk, is also housed on campus.

Bellarmine enrolls around 3,000 students across undergraduate and graduate levels, with a student body that is approximately 61% female and notable for its diversity. The university encourages strong campus engagement with numerous student organizations, faith-based and service opportunities, cultural events, and recreational activities. Athletics also play a prominent role: the Bellarmine Knights compete in NCAA Division I in multiple sports, further enhancing school spirit and community life.

The university has a strong record of student outcomes, with about 98% of graduates employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation, and the majority working in their chosen fields. Recognized as one of the “best value” institutions in the region, Bellarmine combines the rigor of a liberal arts foundation with the practical benefits of professional preparation, encouraging students to gain hands-on experience through internships, clinical practice, and community partnerships.

In sum, Bellarmine University blends Catholic values, a strong liberal arts tradition, and innovative professional programs, offering a transformative education in a supportive and dynamic campus environment.
