Algoma University, commonly known as Algoma U, is a Canadian public university in the province of Ontario with campuses in Sault Ste. Marie, Brampton, and Timmins. Established in 1965 as Algoma University College and initially affiliated with Laurentian University, Algoma gained full independent university status in 2008 through the Algoma University Act.
The university is built on the historic site of the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School, and its Special Mission is rooted in cultivating cross-cultural learning between Anishinaabe (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit) communities and other communities. This commitment to reconciliation, equity, and inclusion shapes every aspect of campus life and academic programming.
