No previous knowledge of Italian is needed as intensive language tuition, including a year spent studying or working in Italy, develops the ability to read, write, and speak the language to a high standard with advanced translation skills. Using techniques from modern linguistics, the programme includes an analysis of the structure of written and spoken English and an exploration of how the language has changed throughout its history. There is a strong tradition of investigating variations of the language, including Scots, distinct dialects of English, and international variations. Students study modern-day English and Scots to identify the similarities and differences between English and other languages, fostering a comparative understanding of Germanic and Romance linguistic structures. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that graduates possess both the specialized knowledge of Italian studies and a sophisticated understanding of the mechanics of language itself.
