Founded on February 28, 1850, the University of Utah is the oldest public university west of the Missouri River and the flagship institution of higher education in the state of Utah. Originally chartered as the University of Deseret, the institution was renamed the University of Utah in 1892 and moved to its current location on the east bench of the Salt Lake Valley in 1900.
