Change the world by changing how you view the world.

The Anthropology program at The University of Toledo in Ohio asks a fundamental question: What does it mean to be human? Anthropology majors study people around the world — people from different times and places. They learn how our thoughts and beliefs are shaped by the cultural communities in which we are raised.

What makes UToledo’s Anthropology program unique? Undergraduates learn by doing. They work in the field, in the lab and in the community. Anthropology bachelor’s degree students are trained to collect, analyze and interpret data.

Anthropology graduates leave The University of Toledo with well-developed communication and critical thinking skills that allow them to solve real-life problems. These skills are valuable in many fields, including education, health care, public policy, social work, ecology and more.

Top Reasons to Study Anthropology at UToledo

  • Hands-on learning.
  • UToledo’s Department of Anthropology likes students to get their hands dirty. Many classes require service learning in the community. Our archaeology field school takes students to an active dig where they learn techniques to investigate and preserve our archaeological history.
  • Study abroad.
  • UToledo’s international field school launched in summer 2017 in the Dominican Republic. Anthropology bachelor’s degree students evaluated the health and education consequences of urban poverty while working in a children’s summer camp. Students have also traveled to South Africa, Mozambique, Ghana and Ireland.
  • Internships.
  • UToledo’s Anthropology Department works with undergraduates to identify and complete internships with community partners and organizations around the world.
  • High-tech labs.
  • Anthropology majors have access to an osteology lab, archeology lab, 3D imaging lab and a statistics and methods lab. Students are trained to analyze and preserve physical data as well as interpret behavioral and cultural data.
  • Research.
  • Students are encouraged to work with faculty and other students on local and remote research projects. UT supports students who want to present their research at regional and national conferences.
