The Master of Science in Agriculture, Ecology and Societies (AGES) at the University of Kassel is a transdisciplinary program that allows students to study agriculture as a complex socio-ecological system. It combines a sound agronomic qualification with a deep understanding of how agriculture is economically and socially embedded, preparing graduates to drive sustainability transitions worldwide.
Hosted by the Department of Ecological Agricultural Sciences in Witzenhausen, the program draws on the expertise and facilities of four faculties at the University of Kassel, including Social Sciences, Humanities and Cultural Studies, and Economics. Kassel-Witzenhausen is the only university campus in Europe that has focused exclusively on organic agriculture since 1996, giving the program a unique academic foundation.

Curriculum and Module Structure
The AGES curriculum is structured across four semesters and 120 ECTS credits. Students choose from two specialization tracks, Agriculture and Ecology or Society and Environment, and complete a 30-credit Master thesis with interdisciplinary supervision. With only two compulsory core modules, the program encourages students to proactively build their own professional profile through a wide range of electives.
Fundamentals of Agriculture, Ecology and Societies

Research Methods in Transdisciplinary Studies
6 ECTSThe second compulsory module equips students with quantitative and qualitative research methods essential for analyzing complex agricultural and environmental systems across disciplines.
Tropical and Subtropical Agricultural Systems
6 ECTSThis elective module covers plant, soil, and animal sciences in tropical and subtropical contexts, focusing on sustainable production methods and ecological resilience in diverse farming systems.
Agricultural and Food Policy
6 ECTSStudents examine the governance frameworks and policy instruments that shape agricultural systems, food security, and rural development at national, European, and international levels.
Environmental Governance and Sustainability Transitions
6 ECTSThis module explores theories and practices of environmental governance, investigating how institutions, social movements, and policy frameworks drive transitions toward sustainable land use and agriculture.
Master Thesis and Colloquium
30 ECTSIn the fourth semester, students develop and present an independent, transdisciplinary research project of societal relevance. Each thesis is supervised by two supervisors from different disciplines and concludes with a colloquium presentation.
