Stanford University, officially Leland Stanford Junior University, is a private research university located in Stanford, California, adjacent to Palo Alto in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in 1885 by California senator Leland Stanford and his wife Jane in memory of their only child, the university opened its doors to students in 1891 as a coeducational and non-denominational institution.
