Economic History MSc
London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom
The MSc Economic History provides a historical and interdisciplinary perspective on important economic problems such as the causes of long-run economic development, the expansion of businesses and financial markets, the role of the government in the economy and the origins of globalisation. Students will be able to choose from a wide range of elective courses in economic history, allowing them to compile a programme according to their interests and career goals. The MSc also requires students to complete a dissertation on an approved topic of their choice, providing the opportunity to conduct original research and make a meaningful contribution to the field. Economic history combines the skills of the economist and statistician with those of the historian, political scientist and sociologist, offering students a uniquely comprehensive analytical toolkit. The programme provides broad training in social science research methods and their application to historical study, including the role of theory, evaluation, analysis and explanation, quantitative techniques and computing, the use of sources and presentational skills. Through this interdisciplinary approach, students develop expertise in interpreting historical economic phenomena using rigorous analytical frameworks. The MSc curriculum emphasises both theoretical understanding and practical application, enabling students to critically engage with primary and secondary sources while employing sophisticated quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Students gain proficiency in econometric analysis, data interpretation, and historical argumentation, preparing them for advanced research and professional roles. Graduates of the MSc programme are equipped for diverse career paths, including academic research and teaching, policy analysis, financial institutions, heritage and cultural organisations, and government advisory roles.
