The BDes (Hons) Sound for the Moving Image at Glasgow School of Art is a two-year honours degree programme that has been running since 2018. The BDes (Hons) Sound for the Moving Image programme is structured across two years (Stage 3 and Stage 4), progressing from foundational sound production techniques to advanced, self-directed creative projects. In Stage 3, students work primarily to provided briefs, while in Stage 4 they also create work according to self-directed, student-led goals. The curriculum blends studio practice with critical studies to develop both technical craft and theoretical understanding.
Introduces the fundamentals of recording and constructing soundscapes in stereo, covering microphone techniques, field recording, and audio editing workflows for moving image projects.
Students learn to create original documentary, abstract, and narrative film works, integrating sound design with fixed-frame visual compositions to develop audio-visual storytelling skills.
Explores interactive audio-visual technologies and systems, enabling students to build installations and experiences that respond dynamically to audience input and environmental conditions.
An advanced Year 4 module covering surround sound, ambisonics, and immersive audio techniques applied to 360-degree film and spatial media environments.
Students develop skills in composing and producing original music for visual media, exploring scoring techniques, sound-image relationships, and music production workflows.

Admission Requirements
The BDes (Hons) Sound for the Moving Image programme recruits directly into Stage 3 (Year 3), welcoming students with prior qualifications from Further Education colleges or international equivalents, as well as mature students with relevant experience.
