Program Overview: Sculpture & Environmental Art at GSA
Sculpture & Environmental Art at The Glasgow School of Art is one of the few specialist undergraduate programmes in the UK, and the only one in Scotland, dedicated to exploring relationships between object-making, art in public and social engagement, underpinned by contemporary critical and cultural debates. The programme is taught by practising artists and researchers at the forefront of the field and is designed for students dedicated to achieving both artistic excellence and cultural relevance.
The department enables you to explore dynamic relationships between object-making, material and dematerialised practice, public art, and social engagement. While Sculpture has been taught at GSA since the 19th century, the introduction of Environmental Art in the mid-1980s and the creation of a single, integrated programme in 2001 has led to a pioneering, cross-disciplinary approach to fine art education.
Renowned for globally successful alumni, including Turner Prize winners and nominees, the programme is deeply rooted in Glasgow's distinct and dynamic artistic and cultural ecology. You will test your work in public contexts through the city's numerous cultural spaces and venues, building confidence and exploring how your practice can engage audiences and reach new publics.

Curriculum & Modules
The four-year programme integrates both theory and practice across all stages, with interdisciplinary credit-bearing courses running throughout to deepen your critical awareness and extend the influences underpinning your practical enquiry. Skills are gained through experiencing a broad range of disciplines including drawing, casting, wood and metal fabrication, photography, video, computing, and sound.
Studio Practice: Sculpture
CoreDevelop practical and philosophical understanding of sculpture through construction, casting, and fabrication, extending into time-based art practices such as video, performance, and installation.
Studio Practice: Environmental Art
CoreExplore contextual approaches to art-making through the annual Public Art Project, preparing you to create work in and for diverse contexts beyond traditional gallery settings.
Fine Art Critical Studies (FACS)
CoreInterdisciplinary courses bringing together students from multiple departments to research and discuss key ideas informing how art is made, received, and understood through critical theory and artistic practices.
Material and Spatial Practice
CoreGain command of conceptual and technical processes in the expanded field of sculptural practice, working with both traditional and contemporary materials and media.
Public Art and Social Engagement
CoreSeminars and lectures on the history, theory, and professional practices of public art in its broadest sense, developing an informed understanding of how to make art in response to a context.
Honours Project and Exhibition
