Program Overview: MSc Medical Visualisation & Human Anatomy
The MSc Medical Visualisation and Human Anatomy is a 12-month taught postgraduate programme offered by the School of Innovation and Technology at The Glasgow School of Art in collaboration with the Anatomy Facility at the University of Glasgow. Accredited by the Institute of Medical Illustrators, the programme provides a unique opportunity to combine actual cadaveric dissection with 3D digital reconstruction, interaction, visualisation and medical illustration using state-of-the-art virtual reality facilities.
You will split your time between two prestigious institutions: The Glasgow School of Art (School of Simulation and Visualisation) at Pacific Quay and The University of Glasgow Anatomy Facility at Gilmorehill Campus. This dual-campus experience places you in direct contact with experienced creative technologists, researchers and anatomists, providing an unparalleled interdisciplinary learning environment.
The programme allows you to examine human anatomy and reconstruct it in a real-time 3D environment for use in education, simulation and training. With the steadily increasing use of multimedia resources and 3D interactive visualisation in biomedical fields, graduates are placed in a leading global competitive position to advance in medical research, academia and commercial organisations.
Key Program Highlights
- Accredited by the Institute of Medical Illustrators, ensuring professional recognition in the field of medical visualisation
- Hands-on cadaveric dissection at the University of Glasgow's Laboratory of Human Anatomy, one of the largest in Europe
- Access to cutting-edge technologies including Extended Reality (VR/AR), stereographic 3D, haptic devices and volumetric visualisation tools
- Joint expertise from expert anatomists, researchers, computer scientists and digital artists across two top-ranked institutions
Curriculum & Modules
The programme is structured into three compulsory stages: Stage 1 focuses on digital technologies applied to medical visualisation at the School of Simulation and Visualisation, Stage 2 covers human anatomy at the University of Glasgow's Anatomy Facility, and Stage 3 involves a self-directed final research project supported with individual supervision throughout.
Medical Visualisation
40 CreditsThis course comprises three key strands: Volumetric Visualisation teaches you to work with 3D medical scan data such as CT; 3D Modelling and Animation develops digital reconstruction skills; and Applications in Medical Visualisation covers interactive development for healthcare contexts.
3D Modelling and Animation
15 CreditsDevelop core skills in 3D digital modelling and animation techniques applied to anatomical and medical subjects, learning to create accurate and detailed digital reconstructions of human anatomy.
Applications in Medical Visualisation
15 CreditsExplore the design and development of interactive visualisations and applications for healthcare, including patient information tools, training applications for medical practitioners, and diagnostic and clinical applications.
Introduction to Anatomy
20 CreditsGain foundational knowledge in human anatomy through lectures, prosection study and introductory laboratory work at the University of Glasgow's Anatomy Facility.
Structure and Function of the Human Body
20 CreditsStudy the detailed structure and function of the human body through an integrated approach combining theoretical knowledge with practical anatomical examination and prosection study.
MSc Research Project
60 CreditsUndertake a self-directed final research project co-supervised by staff from both GSA and the University of Glasgow. Projects often involve cutting-edge technologies such as volumetric visualisation, high-resolution 3D animations, 3D printing and Extended Reality.
